Research Project: Multifunctional Fibers for Flexible Electronics and High-tech Textiles
Workplace: VinUniversity, Hanoi, Vietnam Mode of Study: Full-time
Supervisor: Prof. Nguyen-Dang Tung Program Duration: 2 years
Salary: 20.000.000 VND/month Annual Application Deadline: July 15
Project Goal:
This project aims to develop scalable methods for the mass production of durable, multifunctional fibers using the thermal drawing process. These fibers will seamlessly integrate embedded electronic architectures into flexible smart textiles capable of sensing, computing, and energy harvesting, enabling next generations of wearable technologies.
Position highlights:
Scalable Thermal Drawing: The project leverages the thermal drawing process to transform complex electronic manufacturing from rigid silicon wafers into continuous, kilometer‑long flexible fibers, enabling cost‑effective and high‑throughput production of smart yarns.
Monolithic “Device‑in‑Fiber” Architecture: Functional microelectronic components, including metals, insulators, and semiconductors, are directly encapsulated within a protective cladding during the drawing process, resulting in highly durable, fully integrated electronic fibers.
Seamless Textile Integration: The multifunctional fibers are engineered with sufficient mechanical robustness to withstand standard industrial textile processes such as weaving and knitting, ensuring that the final fabrics remain fully functional.
Multifunctional Platforms: The project integrates multiple capabilities, such as distributed sensing, electromagnetic scattering, and energy harvesting, into a single textile platform, paving the way for self‑sustaining wearable systems.
AI‑Driven Design and Data Analytics: Artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques are employed to optimize fiber sensor design and to analyze complex, multimodal data collected from textile‑based sensors, enabling applications in health monitoring and advanced human–machine interfaces.
Benefits:
100% tuition covered
A monthly stipend of 20 million VND
Research funding and support for scientific publications
Opportunities to work closely with leading professors and scientists, joining research groups to tackle real-world scientific and technological challenges
Requirements:
Hold a bachelor's degree with at least a Good classification or have relevant scientific publications in the field of application.
Having an IELTS certificate of 6.5 (or equivalent) in English within two years (24 months) before the admission registration date or have a bachelor's degree in English or graduate from a bachelor's program taught in English.
